The Great Debate: Is Men's Body Hair Out?

By Austin Silver

When it comes to looking good, men usually go for the tried-and-true formula of dressing right, smelling great, and making sure every strand of hair on their heads is in place.
But there's one area that seems to provide no clear-cut answers: What do we do about all the hair on our bodies? Most fashion and fitness magazines display men with nary a hair in sight.

Hollywood men also seem to be jumping on the hairless bandwagon, as many of today's stars, especially the younger ones, are taking it off -- body hair, that is. So this begs the question: Is body hair out?

Why is it such an issue?

Let's face it; most metropolitan men want to be stylish, and their appearance is a top priority. If the general consensus among women is that men's bodies have to be silky smooth (i.e. hair-free), guys will want to know about it. But if the old stigma (that real men don't wax) is still prevalent, then they may be hesitant to take that next waxing step, and leave it to the "pretty boy" models instead.

Forget about the pain that comes with pulling off those cotton strips. To impress the ladies, men will do just about anything; and the same rings true on the women's end... ever hear of a bikini wax? Ouch.

So to wax, or not to wax, that is the real question.

what do women think?

In search of a definitive answer, I conducted an informal survey with 25 single women between the ages of 19-35. They were given a sheet with the names of different body parts and, on a scale of 1-10, asked to rate how they feel about hair on those respective parts. Some general observations were also included.

When asked what they thought about body hair in general, answers covered both extremes -- one woman said chest hair was "nasty," while another preferred a "natural, hairier look."

arms, legs and back

For the most part though, it seems that most of the women -- 80% in fact -- agree with me that most men should keep their hair as is. Arm and leg hair removal is still a little too "risqué" for many, so unless you're built like a Greek god or swim professionally, leave it alone.

Hairy backs are an entirely different story. The results are in and there's no need for a recount: back hair has to go... immediately. It is grossly unappealing and is a little too "barbaric" for most ladies.

The face

Then, of course, there's the always in vogue facial hair, made more popular these days thanks to the superstar endorsements by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Whether it be a beard, a mustache or both, you decide what looks best. The women on my panel revealed that they'd probably agree with you, as long as you don't look like Santa Claus.

And finally...

The only question left to answer, then, is what do we do with our chest hair? If yours resembles Austin Powers, lose it and fast. But generally speaking, is there a preference?

The women on my panel were divided on the issue. While some found the sight of chest hair creeping up from an unbuttoned shirt revolting, others seemed to think it's cool (and I'm sure none of them have a problem with Pierce Brosnan or Antonio Banderas showing a little fuzz).

Depending on whether you're a tough guy or a teddy bear, it seems that women are ready to accept chest hair in whatever shape or form, as long as it matches said guy's personality.

Don't forget the basics

While we're on the topic of hair, let me remind you about some basic grooming tips. While it may not be outward body hair per se, always keep an eye out for protruding nose and ear hair. If it's sticking out of your nostrils or earlobes, then a hairy chest should be the least of your worries.

Likewise, be wary of unibrows -- you know, that one long eyebrow that makes its way from one side of your forehead to the other (think Bert from Sesame Street).

You may think plucking is feminine, but it's a must when it comes to sex appeal. Most girls love to groom, so you can let your girlfriend do it for you and get some quality time in the process (minus the wincing and yelling).

The verdict

Men shouldn't fall into that trap of wanting to look like those guys in fitness magazines. The fact that you and your girlfriend both shave your legs is not a great common ground to have.

If you've made bodybuilding your way of life, however, then go ahead and show off your hairless body. Otherwise, keep everything as is, trim when necessary, and don't forget the routine spot checks on your back.

Chest hair is a judgment call, so take a look in the mirror and if you think that what's under that rug is worth seeing in all its glory, then viva las waxes.

But in figuring out whether body hair is in or out, it's obvious that there are no definitive answers like there are with clothes. But just like clothes, body hair is a part of fashion and an extension of who you are, so give it some serious thought.

The bottom line

Don't assume that because you're a guy, you can look like a grizzly bear. Women do pay attention to how well a guy takes care of himself. Get rid of whatever needs to go, and trim whatever needs to be trimmed.

Whether you like it or not, appearances are everything when it comes to first impressions, and you shouldn't let body hair do all the talking.
